01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Sweet-savoury sauce clings to chicken thigh, grilled until its edges are fragrant. Ishibashi, in Shinkawa, Chūō Ward, has served its signature kiji-jū—chicken grilled with the restaurant’s house sauce—for years. Lift the lid and steam rises with the aroma of the glaze; its full, savoury flavour makes the rice hard to leave behind.
A lunchtime favourite, the Jō-kiji set pairs kiji-jū with tsukune (chicken meatballs) and salad. For an even more substantial bowl, you can add extra meat. There are plenty of other chicken dishes, too: tsukune-jū, topped with 3 skewers; chicken and burdock-root rice with egg, cooked in a dashi-rich sauce; and the classic oyakodon, a rice bowl topped with chicken and egg. Fish dishes broaden the choice, from eel rice grilled with continuously replenished sauce to a mackerel simmered in miso set, available in limited quantities. The menu offers options to suit the day’s appetite.
Japanese Set Meals for Lunch and Dinner
The restaurant has counter seats on the 1 floor, where you can feel the energy of the kitchen, as well as seating on the 2 floor. It suits a solo lunch or a relaxed meal with colleagues. In the evening, the menu includes Japanese set meals such as grilled chicken, fried chicken and sashimi, making it a useful choice for a proper dinner after work. Come for drinks and yakitori or small plates, or settle in for a freshly prepared set meal.
